It is in the shape of either a square or a heart, and is an emblem of union, strength, chastity and commitment, as well being the material incarnation of the promises the married couple make to one and other about the future. The wedding bands sit on the cushion, and are attached or tied with a ribbon. This has sacred, magical meaning: the knot in the ribbon symbolizes a belief in fighting off death.
